Most buyers start taking supplier selection seriously only after a first shipment goes wrong: capacity that arrives short of the label, internal resistance that climbs after three months, or customs asking for documents that turn out to belong to a different company. Here is the checklist we hand to buyers — use it on any candidate supplier, including us.

1. First, know whether you are talking to a factory or a trader

There is nothing wrong with trading companies — for small volumes of standard products they can be more flexible. But if your project needs custom specifications, consistent batches and traceable cells, every extra layer means slower problem-solving, no access to the production floor, and cells whose origin cannot be explained.

How to tell them apart

  • The quoted address should match a registered manufacturing business — check the business scope, not just the name.
  • Ask for a live video call, not a pre-recorded factory film. Have them walk the camera past equipment, work-in-progress and operators.
  • Ask how many spot welders, aging cabinets and grading machines they run. Traders usually cannot describe the floor layout or machine count.
  • Ask what they produced last month and in what quantity. Factories answer with numbers.
  • Ask the same specification question three times and see whether the parameters stay consistent.

2. Pin down the cells: brand, grade and channel

Roughly eighty percent of a pack's performance is decided by the cells. You need three answers: which cell maker (branded or unbranded), what grade (brand-new Grade-A, or B-grade, salvaged or refurbished), and where they were bought (direct from the maker or from the spot market).

A reliable supplier writes the cell brand and grade on the quotation, and lets you verify cell markings and batch records at inspection. If the answer is only "high-quality cells" or "A-grade" with no brand, expect commodity spot-market stock.

3. Two technical answers that reveal real capability

a) How do they grade and match cells?

Cells from the same batch still differ in capacity and internal resistance. Grading (capacity sorting plus IR testing) and then matching cells by measured values is what keeps a pack balanced for its whole life. A workshop without grading equipment is relying on "close enough" — which is why some packs swell within a year.

b) Do they age 100% of production, or sample it?

Full-load aging exposes bad welds, protection-board faults and weak cells before shipping. Aging every unit costs capacity and time — which is exactly where cheap quotes come from. Ask how many hours they age, and whether it is 100% or sampling.

4. Documents: who issued them, what they cover, how long they last

Certificates are the easiest thing to fake and the easiest to verify. Ask for the original scan or the issuing lab's verification link, and check that the applicant company name matches the company you are contracting with.

5. Send this checklist with your RFQ

Giving all of this upfront saves three rounds of emails and makes quotes comparable on equal terms:

  • Application and device model (voltage platform, connector type)
  • Voltage (series count), nominal capacity, and required actual discharge capacity
  • Continuous and peak discharge current, plus peak duration
  • Size limits, enclosure material, and whether communication is needed (SMBus / CAN / Bluetooth)
  • Target market, required certifications, destination port and packing requirements
  • First-order quantity and expected annual volume
